Brendan McCarthy/AquatheriumNo one imagined that the 5-year old kid banging out the “2001: A Space Odyssey” theme on the piano would end up making his own music one day. But looking back on his career as an artist and producer, Brendan McCarthy (B. McCarthy) can trace his creative origins to that early moment. Since that time he has been fascinated by future technologies and the creation of sound.Known for a style that interlaces soulful tones with more synthetic, “techy” sounds, Bay Area native B. McCarthy has been producing music for over a decade. He traces his funky, bluesy, psychedelic sound back to 70’s bands like the Steve Miller Band as well as New Wave groups like Yaz and Depeche Mode. And he remembers being shaken awake by Nine Inch Nails’ radical combination of industrial sounds with electro beats. But it might have been the Roland Company that had the biggest impact on his growth. Experimenting with keyboard synthesizers, Brendan soon became adept at using MIDI technology to combine and create new sounds. His creativity landed him an invitation to join San Francisco’s 3rd Floor Productions in 1993 and signaled the beginning of a career at the forefront of house music production. At the leading edge of what was about to become the San Francisco house movement, 3rd Floor Productions brought together such talent as Rasoul, DJ EFX, DJ Digit, Buck, Hardkiss, Single Cell Orchestra, and Spacetime Continuum. While there, Brendan produced remixes for major-label talent like Dee-Lite, Sting, Depeche Mode and Boy George. He recalls that everyone who was anyone came through the studio those days, making 3rd Floor instrumental in establishing SF as a center for house music.A move to the UK in 1996 provided Brendan with the opportunity to sharpen his identity as an artist. Playing in legendary spots like the Hacienda, the Ministry of Sound, Back to Basics and E-Werks, he became know for shaking down the timbers night after night. Not just a vinyl jockey, he performed live with drum machines, keyboards, samplers and turntables, bringing his exotic West Coast flavor to the heart of the Old County. At the same time, he continued to produce records for labels like Subwoofer, Strictly Rhythm, Bomba and Freshly Squeezed. Two years later, back in the States, Brendan released his first full-length album on Moist Records under the name Aquatherium. The first single, “Discoacidfunk” was released as a 12” and became an underground San Francisco hit, featured on numerous DJ mix CDs, including Jeno’s “Rising to the Top, Volume 1 and 2”.The year 2000 marked Brendan’s return to the Bay Area, which he found thriving on the rich foundation of house music that he had a hand in building. With a huge array of talented house labels, artists and producers to work with, Brendan was soon behind the mixing board again under the production name B. McCarthy. His releases on Moody Recordings and Leaf Recordings quickly began burning up the clubs, as did his remixes for Two Smoking Barrels (Terry Francis and Tony Hewitt) on Yoshi Toshi. After a brief hiatus in Hawaii, B. McCarthy is back doing what he loves. Always an innovator, he senses a change happening in the industry; people are looking for something new – a different style, new performance techniques, something fresher – and he’s looking to be the one to give it to them. So Brendan continues to work with the pace setters, who, like himself, are looking to move the industry forward. Victor ImbresVICTOR IMBRES first entered music at the age of 13 getting piano lessons on his first keyboard. He put several bands together after his move to DC and finally hooked up with Ali and Sharam of Deep Dish during a remix, which was released by Tribal Records. That track was “High Frequency by Quench.” At the same time Victor was also working with BT (Brian Transeau) who he met during another remix.VICTOR IMBRES formed Alcatraz with Jean Philippe, and they both produced the hit song “Giv Me Luv”. Victor then teamed up with Ruth Rothwell in the UK and formed Greenlight Records in 1997. Greenlight soon released two top 40 UK Hits: Submerge “Take Me By The Hand” and Coco “I Need A Miracle”. Victor Imbres also produced Lithium “Ride A Rocket” around that time. Victor continued making dance house records until 1999. During that year Victor lost interest in music and decided to go back to college to pursue computer programming.VICTOR IMBRES returned to music in 2006 and started again towards a long and successful career in music production and writing. Over the past few years his love of music has developed back into the same creative passion he once had in the 90’s. Victor has started new projects and collaborations and has revisited a new inspiration and energy. Now in 2008 Victor is working on a dance single per month and is back in music full time.Victor Imbres wrote, produced, and/or engineered the following UK charted records:Fragma with Coco "Toca’s Miracle"UK top chart position 1(original)Lithium with Sonya Madan "Ride A Rocket"UK top chart position 38(original)Submerge with Jan Johnston "Take Me By The Hand"UK top chart position 28(original)Alcatraz with Dihann Moore "Giv Me Luv"UK top chart position 7(original)Delacy "Hideaway"UK top chart position 2(remix)Sandy B. They achieved international status with the hit "Fascinating Rhythm" (Virgin), which Sharon co-wrote. An album soon followed, cementing the group’s worldwide status as a credible dance act and Sharon’s ability as a writer. A world tour established Bass-O-Matic as an act that could cut it live, due in large part to Sharon’s stage presence. In a recent interview with the UK’s Record Mirror, William Orbit, (Grammy for Madonna’s "Ray of Light"), throws accolades Sharon’s way saying, "I don’t have to worry about playing live when I’ve got Sharon on stage with me, because she’s a consummate singer," William adds "No worries, she’s done it all. The studio’s my home, the stage is hers!"In 1992 Sharon was invited by WEA to work with jazz pianist Julian Joseph. She collaborated on the "Language of Truth" album singing the Curtis Mayfield song "The Other Side of Town". This track was eventually used as the single from the album. The video for this track inspired a Teacher’s Whisky commercial, in which Sharon appeared, playing a blues singer in a 60’s bar scene, singing the classic "No Greater Love". Sharon gigged with Julian promoting the "Language of Truth" album and touring with such jazz greats as Herbie Hancock.Sharon’s studio work in England, both as a writer and session singer, led her to work with Courtney Pine, Maxi Priest, Tears For Fears, and writers, and producers, Terry Briton, Henry Priestman, Jimmy Haynes, Steve Harvey, Phil Chill and Adrian Wyatt. Her final collaboration in the UK before returning to Canada was in 1998 on the "Get in the Swing" album with Steve Alpert.Since returning to Canada Sharon has enjoyed a successful solo career both live and on record. Her most recent Canadian solo release in 2002, "Selah" (Zosar Records) earned her two nominations, "Best Songwriter" and "Best Spoken Word", at the prestigious Urban Music Association of Canada award show, held that year in Toronto. Jude Kelly, VP of UMAC claims "The title track "Selah" is especially brilliant". The video for this track achieved top twenty status on the Bravo video chart. Then came the international release "Nobody," a track included on the groundbreaking CD "Soulfragettes", (Recoup/Timewarp). This is a unique compilation of powerful R&B female singers. Sharon’s track, co-written with Adrian Wyatt, was singled out for special attention, and is included on a number of other compilations one of which also includes Nora Jones, Simply Red and Coldplay.Sharon currently tours Canada, working at various casinos, festivals and events. She recently performed the jazzy commercial for Calla Lily Fine Lingerie, a retailer of Fine Imported European lingerie. She is constantly heard over the airwaves all over the world. She is currently working on her new CD entitled "Outflow."DiscographyIn The Realm of the Senses 1990 Virgin RecordsGet in the Swing 1998 Hubbcap RecordsSelah 2002 Zosar RecordSoulfragettes 2002 Recoup/TimewarpIziza Lounge 3 2003 DurecoDJ EFXSan Francisco's lively house scene owes a lot to DJ EFX (Raul Recinos in real life). Though never really at risk of stepping into mainstream stardom, he is much respected and admired by fans of underground music. The prolific DJ and producer began his quest to redefine the Bay Area's house movement in the late 1980s. Raul started 3rd Floor Productions which was located above B.P.M Records on Polk Street. It became THE place to be.Besides creating his own tunes, he remixed tracks for David Bowie, Rozalla, Deep Forrest, Rupaul, Barbara Tucker and many many more. He also released a bevy of cult tunes (often through the Strictly Rhythm and Underground Construction labels) and collaborated with a whole parade of gifted artists. Hunting down all of his work, however, can be a little tricky, as he has recorded under several different guises, including Killa Green Buds, Studio X, Digifx, The Budwrestlers, Xtreme Funktrimists and E-Team, just to name a few.You can find more info on DJ EFX´s work on www.discogs.comCoco StarCoco Star is a Welwyn Garden City (UK) Born Gospel singer signed to Universal/MCA Records. She began her early career working with the Founder of ‘Way Out West’ DJ Jody Wistenoff (her collaborations with Wistenoff were under the group ‘SubLove’) during her spare time studying a BA in Fashion in Bristol UK.Her exceptional vocals earned her the respect of many in the West Country Music scene, and during this time she was never far from the likes of Massive Attack and the Brand New Heavies, whilst back at home in Hertfordshire. Working along side Universal Signed Songwriters Rob Davies and Victor Imbres, she began promoting her first Commercial release “I need a Miracle” back in 1994/95. With a dawn of a new era of Dance music rapidly becoming established, EMI dance subsidiary ‘Positiva Records’ quickly snapped her up, and “I need a Miracle” was launched in the Summer of 1997 on the Dance floors of Ibiza. This iconic Vocal is never to be bettered, and international interest soared to new heights when ‘I need a Miracle’ was remixed my German Dance producers ‘Fragma’ in 2000. Following the success of their Instrumental “Toca Me”, Coco’s iconic song way layered collaboratively to form the timeless “Toca’s Miracle” which went on to achieve Gold Disk status for 400,000 sales in the UK alone. It topped charts in 14 Countries…to which others were added (now 17 countries world-wide) following a further 2008 remix of ‘I need a Miracle’; entitled Toca’s Miracle Inpetto remix.Coco’s talents go further than a 6+ octave Gospel Voice…as she is also a gifted Songwriter. Her 2-step Garage collaboration entitled ‘It ain’t enough’ was a top 20 hit in 2001 when she both wrote and performed this catchy melody with the Dreemteam, the Artful Dodger and Craig David. Her latest self penned titles are “Get over you”, “Kick Yourself” and “Second Chances”. These performances feature her trademark power Gospel Vocals, coupled with catchy melodies and thought provoking lyrics. She also continues to perform those songs which strike her cord with her personally, and live performances of “Gimme the Reason” (Luthor Vandross) and “Loving Arms” (Billie Ray Martin) are not to be missed. For Bookings please contact MN2SFunkdaWell what can i say music has always been a part of my life.
